In this talk I explore the cosmological revolution introduced by the move to the Copernican system. This revolution was primarily a revolution in our basic understanding of the structure of reality and only secondarily a revolution in astronomy.

The theory of loop quantum gravity suffers from what has come to be known as ``the problem of time,” according to which the world does not include time. In the following, I will highlight dubious assumptions about the nature of time and argue that the problem results not from the Hamiltonian constraint, as is often claimed. Indeed, I will argue that LQG does not include a genuine Hamiltonian — in the sense of time evolution operator — to begin with. As a result, solutions to the problem of time which focus on the putative Hamiltonian constraint are insufficient for locating time within LQG.

We are both philosophers of physics. As such, we often find ourselves explaining to puzzled faces, on family, friends, students, strangers on trains, even colleagues on occasion, what physics (which rests on experiment) has to do with philosophy (which apparently does not). It's a fair question.
